Professor Jiahua Chen, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Delivers an Academic Lecture at the School of Mathematics and Statistics

On the morning of July 4, 2025, at the invitation of Dean Yu Yongguang of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Jiahua Chen, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and tenured professor at the University of British Columbia, presented a keynote lecture titled "Contributions to Finite Mixture Models" in Room 7125 of the Seventh Teaching Building. Dean Yu presided over the lecture.

In his presentation, Professor Chen first provided a comprehensive overview of finite mixture models, highlighting recent advancements and identifying several critical challenges in the field. Addressing limitations in existing research, the lecture examined Professor Chen's methodological and theoretical contributions through three key dimensions, including parameter estimation, hypothesis testing, and convergence rates, all developed using maximum likelihood estimation and EM algorithms. Professor Chen concluded by summarizing his team's findings on finite mixture model estimation and outlining promising directions for future research.

Following the presentation, Professor Chen engaged in an interactive discussion with faculty and students, addressing inquiries about future research directions in finite mixture models, experimental design methodologies, and sampling techniques. He offered clear and thorough explanations using accessible examples and encouraged attendees.

Dean Yu remarked that Professor Chen, through his profound expertise and rigorous academic approach, comprehensively demonstrated the pivotal role of finite mixture models in big data analysis. The lecture not only enhanced participants' understanding of finite mixture models' underlying mechanisms but also highlighted the vast potential of mathematics and statistics in big data applications. Dean Yu encouraged students to leverage this opportunity for deeper exploration of the field through critical thinking.
