The School of Mathematics and Statistics at Beijing Jiaotong University was established in March 2022, tracing its origins to February 1960 when the Department of Applied Science at Northern Jiaotong University first offered the Applied Mathematics program. The Department of Mathematics was formally established in October 1986, later merging into the School of Arts and Sciences in July 1996, and subsequently becoming part of the School of Science in 1998. The Mathematics discipline has achieved remarkable accomplishments in academic development, talent training, and scientific research.
The School of Mathematics and Statistics comprises four departments and one virtual research institute, including the Department of Information and Computing Science, the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, the Department of Data Science, and the Institute of Fundamental and Interdisciplinary Sciences at Beijing Jiaotong University (virtual entity).
We offer two first-level doctoral programs in Mathematics and Statistics, host a postdoctoral programme in Mathematics, and have been granted the 111 Innovation and Talent Introduction Base for Information and Transportation Operations Research. Our mathematics has been ranked among the top 1% globally in the ESI subject rankings. In the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject, we ranked in the 201–250 range in Statistics and Operations Research and 351–400 in Mathematics. In the QS Mainland China University Rankings, we ranked in the 15–19 range in Statistics and Operations Research and 26–28 in Mathematics.
We have two key laboratories, including the Beijing Key Laboratory of Big Biological Data and Topological Statistics and the Hebei Provincial Key Laboratory of Mathematical Theory and Analysis for Network and Data Science. Additionally, we have established the Experimental Center for Statistics, the Data Science and Engineering Laboratory, and the university-level Scientific Computing Center.
Our faculty consists of 83 full-time teachers, among whom there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, two National Youth Talents, one Beijing Famous Teacher, and two Beijing Young Teaching Excellence Award winners. We boast a high-caliber faculty team and leverage our strengths in disciplines such as Operations Research and Cybernetics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics.
In academic program development, our Information and Computing Science and Statistics programs have been recognized as National First-Class Undergraduate Programs. Additionally, our Data Science program was among the first of its kind in Chinese universities, while the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics program has been designated as a Beijing First-Class Undergraduate Program and focuses on cultivating top-tier talent. We have developed two national first-class courses (Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics (B) and Practical Statistical Software ) and four "Golden Courses" for graduate-level foundational studies (Modern Analysis, Algebra, Topology and Geometry, and Probability Theory). Our school participates in talent training programs of the Ministry of Education and collaborates with the Chinese Academy of Sciences on joint talent cultivation, aiming to nurture interdisciplinary, innovative talent with a strong mathematical foundation.
Moving forward, the School of Mathematics and Statistics will unite faculty and students in striving for excellence, aiming to establish itself as a leading and influential institution in mathematics and statistics education nationwide.
