Statistics

In 2011, our statistics discipline was among the first in China to be authorized as a first-level doctoral degree-granting program and it is a key priority discipline for the university. Statistics and Operations Research was ranked among the top 200 globally in the 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject. Moreover, in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject (Chinese mainland rankings), it secured a position between 18th and 21st.

The discipline currently has 33 full-time faculty members, including one dual-appointed academician, 14 professors, and 9 associate professors. Among them, there is one National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, two National Youth Talents, one recipient of the special government allowance, one Beijing Famous Teacher, and one Beijing Young Teaching Excellence Award winner.

Since the 14th Five-Year Plan, the Statistics discipline has undertaken multiple national and provincial-level research projects. In 2023, it secured one Youth Scientist Project and one key research subject under the National Key R&D Program. It also obtained one second prize in the 2022 Natural Science Awards of the Ministry of Education (as lead discipline) and one second prize in the 2023 Beijing Natural Science Award (as lead discipline). The discipline regularly organizes scholarly collaborations and faculty/student exchanges, and has hosted or co-hosted international and domestic academic conferences. The discipline applies the fundamental ideas, theories, and methods of statistics to process large volumes of data from natural, social, economic, and engineering domains, providing services for scientific management and decision-making to governments, large and medium-sized enterprises, consulting firms, and research institutions.

In recent years, the statistics discipline has focused on transportation, logistics management, and communications as key research subjects, conducting interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of statistics and operations research. Leveraging big data analysis and processing, it has advanced research in statistical learning theory and methods, artificial intelligence, and practical applications. Over time, five distinct and stable research specializations have emerged, including transportation statistics and time series analysis, statistical learning and optimization, stochastic analysis and control, Bayesian statistics and survival analysis, and stochastic network analysis and reliability.
