The Statistics program at Beijing Jiaotong University is one of the key undergraduate programs under the statistics discipline, tracing its origins to the probability and statistics track established in 1986. The program aligns with national strategies in big data and AI development, while integrating with our university's first-class Smart Transportation discipline cluster. Guided by the educational philosophy of "solid foundations, personalized development, focused specialization, and innovation", it has developed five distinctive research areas, including transportation statistics, financial statistics, operations research statistics, AI and big data, and probability theory and mathematical statistics. The Statistics discipline was among the first in China to be granted a first-level doctoral program in 2011. It ranked 11th in the third national discipline assessment, achieved a B+ rating in the fourth assessment, and maintained stable performance in the fifth assessment. From 2021 to 2023, both Statistics and Operations Research were ranked within the top 160 globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. The Statistics program was approved as a national first-class undergraduate program in 2021.
This program aims to cultivate high-level professionals with a solid foundation in mathematics and physics, mastery of the fundamental theories and methods of statistics, proficient computer application skills, and the ability to analyze and design algorithms as well as strong programming expertise. Graduates will be capable of applying statistical theories, methods, and skills to solve practical problems in information technology, scientific computing, and engineering. They will also possess strong abilities in knowledge renewal, technology tracking, and innovation.
The program currently has 46 full-time faculty members, including 18 professors and 21 associate professors. Among them, 44 hold doctoral degrees, and 36 have overseas experience. The faculty includes three Beijing Famous Teachers, one Beijing Excellent Teacher, three Beijing Model Teachers of Ethics, and six recipients of prestigious talent programs such as National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, Ministry of Education’s New Century Excellent Talents, Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation Awards for Young Lecturers from Higher Education Institutions, and National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. Additionally, six distinguished scholars, including dual-appointed academicians and overseas chair professors, have been recruited. The program has been honored with one National Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award (Second Prize) and three Beijing Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards (First Prize), along with 31 other prestigious awards. Additionally, faculty members have published 23 academic monographs and textbooks. The program emphasizes practical training and explores an application-oriented international talent development model. Many outstanding graduates have become academic leaders, including recipients of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund, Youth Thousand Talents Program, and National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, university professors, and researchers. Others have assumed leadership roles or become core technical talents in major companies such as China Unicom, Alibaba, leading banks, railway bureaus, and other key sectors in transportation and finance.
