The Data Science program at Beijing Jiaotong University is one of the first such programs approved for establishment in China in 2023. It is a major strategic emerging program proposed by the state in response to the critical demands of technological, economic, and social development. It constitutes an essential part of the national strategic emerging industries development plan during the 14th Five-Year Plan period and serves as a core discipline under the national "Cloud Adoption, Data Utilization, and Intelligence Empowerment" initiative outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan.

The Data Science program serves multiple industries such as transportation, finance, manufacturing, and energy. It is built upon the first-level disciplines of mathematics and statistics and leverages resources from the Institute of Fundamental and Interdisciplinary Sciences, the Data and Science Engineering Laboratory, the 111 Base, and the Mathematics Experiment Demonstration Center to integrate with the university’s world-class Smart Transportation discipline cluster. Adhering to the educational philosophy of "solid foundations, personalized development, focused specialization, and pursuit of innovation", this program is dedicated to cultivating professionals with strong data science expertise. Students will systematically study the fundamental theories, methods, and skills of data science, undergo comprehensive training in data analysis, and develop outstanding professional competence and foreign language proficiency. This prepares them to excel in data science research and data-driven intelligent analysis and applications across industries.

The program has a dedicated faculty of 36 members, including 13 professors, 17 associate professors, and 6 lecturers. Among them, 32 hold doctoral degrees, and 25 have overseas work experience. The faculty also includes one Beijing Young Teaching Excellence Award winner, as well as three recipients of prestigious honors such as the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scientists, the National Young Top Talent Project, and the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. The faculty team has recruited one dual-appointed academician and six overseas chair professors. The program has been honored with two National Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards (Second Prize) and three Beijing Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards (First Prize) , along with 43 other prestigious awards. Additionally, faculty members have published 26 academic monographs and textbooks.

The Data Science program is dedicated to cultivating students with a strong sense of national pride, social responsibility, and mission; a solid foundation in mathematics and statistics, professional data analysis and processing skills, and strong foreign language communication abilities; as well as broad international perspectives, continuous knowledge updating, and technological innovation capabilities. Graduates will not only be able to pursue further studies in research institutions or universities, focusing on research in the field of data science, but they can also engage in scientific research, application development, teaching, and management related to finance, transportation, industry, energy, and other fields in research institutions, universities, government agencies, and high-tech enterprises.
