Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Program

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is recognized as a first-class undergraduate program in Beijing. This program traces its roots to the Applied Mathematics established in 1960. It received the authority to award master's degrees in Applied Mathematics in 1990 and to confer first-level doctoral degrees in Mathematics in 2010. In 2013, the program launched the "Zhixing Class", an elite pilot program for fundamental disciplines, initiating the exploration of an integrated undergraduate-graduate training model. Each year, approximately 20 students are admitted to the program. In 2020, leveraging the resources of Jeme Tienyow Honors College, the program adopted an elite "3+5" integrated bachelor-doctorate training model to cultivate talent, emphasizing strengthened mathematical foundations and interdisciplinary approaches. To further enhance the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents in fundamental disciplines, the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Elite Pilot Class was established in 2024.

The class builds upon the strengths of the Beijing Key Interdisciplinary Discipline of Information and Operations Research and the National 111 Innovation and Talent Introduction Base for Information and Transportation Operations Research. With a focus on cutting-edge fundamental research in mathematics, the class aims to cultivate high-caliber, interdisciplinary leaders in foundational and applied mathematics. Targeting key research areas such as operations research and cybernetics, equations and computation, combinatorics and coding theory, graph and network theory, as well as statistics and optimization, the class is designed to nurture talents who possess a strong sense of social responsibility and cultural literacy, demonstrates rigorous scientific thinking and independent, innovative spirit, exhibits a global perspective and effective teamwork skills, and aspire to tackle fundamental scientific challenges and push the boundaries of knowledge.

The class follows an educational idea centered on "seamless undergraduate-to-graduate transition, flexible career pathways, and personalized development". Adopting a mentorship-based, small-class teaching model with individualized learning plans, the class ensures that all qualified students receive a smooth and integrated academic progression from undergraduate to graduate studies. Students have the flexibility to choose from various pathways, including on-campus recommendation for graduate studies, external recommendation (to other institutions), postgraduate entrance exams, studying abroad, or employment. They may also take graduate-level courses in advance, ensuring full respect for individual aspirations. Most graduates pursue recommended admission to mathematics programs or interdisciplinary fields such as information science, economics, transportation, and statistics, either at the home institution or other universities.

The program boasts a dedicated faculty of 45 full-time members, including 22 professors and 20 associate professors, all holding doctoral degrees. The faculty includes three Beijing Famous Teachers, one Baosteel Excellent Teacher Award recipient, one Beijing Outstanding University Teaching Administrator, one dual-appointed academician, one National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, and six overseas chair professors. The program has also been recognized with three first prizes for the Beijing Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award and has produced three exemplary textbooks.

The faculty and students of the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics program at Beijing Jiaotong University remain committed to cultivating top-tier talents with a solid mathematical foundation and innovative interdisciplinary skills. Together with peer institutions, we will forge ahead collaboratively to drive continuous progress in mathematical education and research.
