Program Orientation
The National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scientists (Overseas) seeks to attract outstanding young overseas scholars—including non-Chinese researchers—who have demonstrated excellence in natural sciences. By encouraging them to pursue independent, innovative research in China, the program fosters the rapid development of young scientific talent. Its goal is to cultivate a cohort of future leaders in global science and technology, ultimately contributing to China’s vision of becoming a world-leading scientific powerhouse.
Application Conditions
(1). Requirements for applicants:
1. Abide by the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China, uphold good scientific ethics, and practice the spirit of modern scientific professionalism;
2. Born on or after January 1, 1985;
3. Hold a doctoral degree;
4. Focus on mathematics and statistics;
5. Between obtaining a doctoral degree and April 15, 2025, the applicant must have held a formal teaching or research position at a renowned overseas university, research institution, or corporate R&D center for at least 36 consecutive months. Applicants with outstanding achievements who earned their doctoral degrees abroad may receive relaxed work experience requirements (excluding joint doctoral programs).
Concurrent salaried positions in China during overseas employment do not count toward the 36-month requirement.
6. Achieve recognized research or technical accomplishments with the potential to become a leading scholar or distinguished talent in their field;
7. The applicant has not held a full-time position in China, or has commenced work in China on or after January 1, 2024; Recipients must resign from overseas positions and work full-time in China for at least three years upon receiving the grant.
(2). Restrictions:
Applicants must comply with the national policy on the coordination of science and technology talent programs. An individual may hold only one national-level talent program at the same tier and is not permitted to apply for programs at a lower tier.
Supporting Conditions
1. Position: Professor (tenured senior professional title with institutional establishment), selected into our university's "Outstanding 100 Talents Support Program". For details, please refer to the "Faculty Recruitment Notice at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Beijing Jiaotong University" (see below);
2. National funding model:
Funding amount: RMB 1–3 million
Funding duration: 3 years
3. Compensation package: Competitive salary package, substantial research start-up funds, one-time relocation allowance, eligibility for doctoral student supervision, priority in recruiting Siyuan postdoctoral fellows, and access to high-end transitional housing for talents.
Application Instructions
Interested applicants should submit personal resumes (including education, work experience, and a summary of key academic achievements) to the respective teaching/research unit's contact email, with a copy to Beijing Jiaotong University's Talent Office email. Please use "National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scientists (Overseas)" as the email subject.
After the review and an agreement with the university, a dedicated contact will be assigned to guide applicants through the 2025 online system submission and follow-up procedures.
Notes
1. Eligible applicants may sign a formal or provisional work agreement with the host institution per the program guidelines. After March 3, 2025, the applicants should log in to the application system to complete the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scientists (Overseas) Application Form (hereafter "Application Form").
Applicants must ensure the authenticity and accuracy of all submitted information and take full responsibility for their application materials.
2. Applicants should complete the Application Form in Simplified Chinese or English and upload required attachments following the provided guidelines and outline. Both applicants and host institutions should provide detailed and accurate information, including ID/passport numbers and full work history.
3. The program adopts a paperless application process. Applicants must submit the e-application form, attachments, and integrity pledge online to the host institution, which will review and forward them to the NSFC.
